The United States’ position on the Moroccan Sahara is unambiguous. Massad Boulos, advisor to US President Donald Trump on Arab, Middle East, and African affairs, reiterated this during a one-on-one meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in Washington.
« Today (Friday, September 5, editor’s note) I met with the UN Secretary-General’s envoy for Western Sahara, H.E. Staffan de Mistura. I reiterated the clear position of the United States on the Sahara: genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution for Western Sahara, » Massad Boulos wrote in a post on X after his meeting with Staffan de Mistura in Washington on Friday. The advisor to US President Donald Trump on Arab, Middle East, and African affairs added that they also discussed the “stabilizing role of MINURSO and the paths to regional peace.” He said he was “grateful for the ongoing coordination in preparation for the upcoming Security Council discussion.”
This meeting comes ahead of the Security Council’s annual meeting to review the Sahara issue and renew MINURSO’s mandate, scheduled for late October.
During a visit to Algiers on July 27 as part of a diplomatic mission aimed at “stimulating trade” as a means of stability in the region, Boulos reaffirmed the United States’ position on the Sahara. “The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports your proposal for autonomy as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute,” President Donald Trump reiterated in his letter to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the Throne Day. This recognition “leaves the door open for dialogue to reach a solution accepted by both parties,” said his special advisor, who hopes to reach “a quick solution” to the conflict.
