Cameroon has been designated to host the 2021 Women’s Afrobasket. The continental competition will take place from 17 to 26 September at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports in Yaounde, the capital of this Central African country. The announcement was made by the International Basketball Association (FIBA).
Cameroon has been designated host of the 2021 Women’s Afrobasket by the International Basketball Association (FIBA). This decision follows « the agreement signed, on behalf of the Cameroonian government, by the Minister of Sports of Cameroon, Kombi Mouelle, » FIBA said. This competition brings together 12 nations. And according to FIBA, some of them are automatically qualified.
These include Cameroon, the host country of this new edition and the four semi-finalists in Dakar in 2019, namely Nigeria defending champion, Senegal unfortunate finalist, Mali (3rd) and Mozambique (4th). There are therefore only 7 places left to complete the table of qualified countries for this Afrobasket 2021.
According to FIBA, regional qualifying tournaments should be organised by the end of this month of May 2021. « The last tickets will be obtained by July, with the winners of each of them qualifying directly for the final phase in Cameroon, » explained the world basketball body.
As a reminder, Cameroon hosted the 2015 edition. Unfortunately, the Indomitable Lionesses will be beaten in the final at home and in front of their audience by the Lionesses of Senegal (81-66). Moreover, Senegal remains the most successful team in this competition (11 titles), ahead of Nigeria (4) and DR Congo (3).
