The Nigerian Afro-pop musician, David Adeleke, also known as Davido, has declared his support for Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine for the Ugandan presidential election scheduled for Thursday, January 14, 2021. Bobi Wine, also a musician, is running against the outgoing President, iYoweri Museveni.
The Nigerian artist David Adeleke, who has just joined the family company for another responsibility in his professional life, is closely following the presidential election in Uganda where his colleague musician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, is running against Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986.
Bobi Wine accused Yoweri Museveni, yesterday Tuesday, of having sent soldiers to invade his home and arrest his security elements. According to reports, the country’s telecommunications regulator, the executive director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Irene Sewankambo, ordered telecommunications companies to suspend access to social media.
In Uganda’s power struggle, Davido has taken a stand. On his Twitter timeline, the Nigerian singer tweeted: « I’m all for good governance! And Bobi seems to be a stand-up guy! He has been fighting for revolution for a long time! Whoever wins… I hope it’s the, will of the people ».
Although Davido, who is Nigerian, cannot vote in Uganda, his popularity across the continent has some influence. It is worth recalling that the Nigerian entertainment industry had a tense relationship with the Ugandan government following the arrest of Nigerian muisician Omah Lay last December for breaking the Covid-19 laws.
