The torrential rains caused huge disturbances on Monday (October 28th) in the country, notably in Tunis, the capital where roads and entire neighborhoods were blocked for hours.
Tunisians have not lost their sense of humor in the face of events even though many have not been able to get to work or find a means of transportation. Photos, videos and jokes about the floods pour over the Tunisian Facebook while 50 to 95 mm of rain fell on Monday in Greater Tunis, causing traffic jams and a total blockage of some arteries.
Canoes to circulate and damage
Some denounced the vehicles of the pound here called « changuel » (« crane ») who continued to put hooves to vehicles while the roads were impassable and many cars were parked, failing to go further.
Others took canoes to move in a street submerged by water. Others have mobilized to open the sewers of their neighborhood and allow the evacuation of water.
North of Tunis, Ariana and Soukra, was declared a disaster area by the municipalities. Protesters even blocked the road on the side of Borj Louzir to protest the damage caused by bad weather.
So if some Tunisians laugh yellow and are a little disillusioned with this situation, it’s because it’s not new. Many people remember the floods in the city of Nabeul, 70 kilometers from Tunis, which had killed six people in 2018.
On Tunis, it is the bad infrastructure that is evoked, sometimes causes a faulty evacuation of water, the carelessness of anarchic constructions that sometimes facilitate the infiltration of water in some neighborhoods. The water that has infiltrated tunnels for example has caused the total shutdown of trams serving Grand Tunis until Monday afternoon.
If the situation returned to calm on Monday night, the authorities still call for vigilance on coastal areas that will also experience heavy rains this week.
