Peter Tabichi, you will certainly remember. In 2019, this man won the Global Teacher Prize for the best teacher in the world. After being honored across Africa after the award, the Kenyan teacher found himself facing Pope Francis on Wednesday in the Vatican.
From this meeting, Peter Tabichi retained « the humility » of the patron of the Catholic Church, with whom he formulated « prayers for all teachers in the world ».
A member of the Order of the Franciscans, also a professor of mathematics and physics, the 36-year-old is known in Kenya for his abnegation, but above all for his sacrifices towards the students of the rural world. In particular, he devotes 80% of his monthly salary to caring for poor children.
His efforts have moreover enabled « his school, in a remote rural area with few resources, to win the prize for the best school in the national inter-school science competitions, » said a press release from the Varkey Foundation during the designation by Peter Tabichi as the grand winner of the 5th edition of the Global Teacher Prize, on March 24, 2019, in Dubai.
The Kenyan was then the first African to receive this million dollar award.
