The Moroccan automotive industry is attracting the famous Tesla brand of South African-born American billionaire Elon Musk. US company STMicroelectronics, based in Bouskoura in the Casablanca region, has won a contract to manufacture and supply car parts to the Palo Alto, California-based electric and hybrid carmaker, according to Aujourd’hui Le Maroc.
« This is certainly a first step, but the main thing for the Kingdom is to position itself in the emerging market of electric cars on a global scale. All car manufacturers and brands are starting to manufacture and market fully electric cars with hybrid engines, » the newspaper continues, noting that its models are very popular in the North American and European markets.
For the Cherifian daily, the arrival of Tesla in Morocco, for a contract to manufacture parts for its models, will encourage the country to think bigger in terms of building electric cars. « Brands present in Morocco, such as Dacia or Peugeot, could be next on the list, » it says. However, billionaire Elon Musk’s US carmaker Tesla specialises in high-end 100% electric cars.
