The Kingdom of Morocco, which is waging a fierce battle against terrorism, has strengthened its military capabilities in the Sahel-Saharan region, which has become a breeding ground for terrorists of all stripes (Al Qaeda, Daesh and other groups). However, the kingdom deplores the lack of cooperation with its Algerian neighbour.
Morocco has decided to further strengthen its fight against terrorism in the Sahel-Saharan region, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghrebia. The Cherifian kingdom has formed partnerships with several major powers, including the United States of America. In recent years, the Sahel-Saharan region has become a breeding ground for terrorists of all stripes (Al Qaeda, Daesh and other groups), and consequently a threat to neighbouring states including Morocco and Algeria. The proof is that nearly 982 assassinations, or 41% of the crimes recorded in the region, were perpetrated by these terrorist networks.
This partnership with the United States, a strategic ally, will enable the Moroccan armed forces to anticipate any terrorist interventions on its territory. Since 2016, Morocco has been a member of the multilateral force Africom, initiated by the United States. It has also co-chaired the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) for two terms.
The new director of the BCIJ, Cherkaoui Habboub, recently stated that « more than 100 Polisario Front separatists are members of Al Qaeda » and that the Tindouf camps serve as a training and indoctrination ground for these terrorists who threaten the security of Morocco and the region.
« Regional security cooperation is a sine qua non condition to annihilate the threat, » said the director of the BCIJ, who also deplored the lack of cooperation with Algeria, a country bordering Mali, which certainly has a crucial role to play in this fight against terrorism in the Sahel-Saharan region.
