Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had on Wednesday a telephone conversation with his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to whom he sent his congratulations on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr by expressing to him and to the brotherly Mauritanian people his wishes for more progress and prosperity, said a statement of the Presidency of the Republic.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune exchanged by phone with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. « The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune had, on Wednesday, a telephone conversation with his brother the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to whom he sent his congratulations on the occasion of Eid El-Fitr by expressing to him, as well as to the brotherly Mauritanian people, his wishes for more progress and prosperity, » the statement said.
For his part, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani also « congratulated the President of the Republic on the occasion of Eid El-Fitr, wishing him and the Algerian people continued good and prosperity, » the statement added.
It should be noted that relations between two neighbouring countries, Algeria and Mauritania, are often described as friendly, although there have been several political confrontations in the past, including the war in Western Sahara. During this war, Mauritania and Morocco jointly invaded the Western Sahara region, while Algeria opposed it and supported the Polisario Front.
However, weaker and poorer than Algeria in every respect, Mauritania gave up its claims and re-established the link with Algeria. As a result, Algeria and Mauritania reaped the benefits of the link and became strategic partners.
