Two weeks after hosting the continental judo, Senegal is preparing to organise the African Taekwondo Championship in Dakar, with a view to the next Mediterranean Games of Oran-2022. For this new continental meeting of martial arts, Algeria will be represented by 4 athletes.
Algeria will be present at the African Taekwondo Championship on 5 and 6 June in Dakar, with a view to the next Mediterranean Games of Oran-2022. The four Algerian representatives at the continental meeting (G4) are: Mohamed Guerfi (-63 kg), Hani Tabib (-74 kg), Islam Guetaya (-87 kg) and Nesrine Soualili (-57 kg) led by coach Zeghdoud Merdj.
« They are young athletes under 20 years old, with more or less experience. We would have liked to have three other junior athletes (average age 17) participate, but for the high cost of tickets and the lack of available seats on the plane, » Samir Maiana, secretary-general of the Algerian Taekwondo Federation, told the Algerian Press Agency. « The Algerian group selected for the Dakar meeting had taken part in the international tournament in Rabat, in February 2020, with a view to qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, but unfortunately failed in this mission, » he said.
« On the other hand, the federal body plans to organize, in the coming days, a selection camp to offer the opportunity to young promising athletes (juniors) to integrate the ranks of the national team, knowing that it is currently impossible to organize competitions and tournaments at the national level, » said Samir Maiana.
