The majority of French people continue to support the operation of French forces Barkhane, Mali. Six out of ten French people, 58%, surveyed in an Ifop survey were in favor of France’s commitment in this country of the Sahel, plagued by an alarming security situation.
The survey published on Monday in the weekly La Lettre de l’Expansion, underlines that the murderous collusion of two helicopters that left 13 dead in the ranks of French soldiers last week in Mali, did not begin the trust of the people. « The level of support of the French remains very stable, » said Jérôme Fourquet, who participated in the survey.
This heavy human toll, however, has had the effect of an electroshock in France, whose army had not suffered such losses since the attack on the French headquarters Drakkar in Beirut in 1983, which had killed 58 people. The causes of the accident have not yet been elucidated, even though the Islamic State group in the Great Sahara claimed responsibility for the attack without proving it.
Last week, French head of state Emmanuel Macron considered a reassessment of the French army’s operations in the Sahel and urged his NATO allies to engage more, while the security horizon darkens moreover despite the presence of 4,500 French soldiers, the UN force and the Malian army.
This Monday, a tribute to the 13 fallen French soldiers was under way at the Invalides, in Paris, in the presence of Malian head of state Ibrahim Boubacar Kéita.
