Four miners have been missing since Friday in a gold mine in South Africa following a mini-earthquake have died, said Sunday a union.
« The four miners were found dead, » according to a statement from the national miners’ union (Num).
They had been missing since Friday in the Tau Lekoa mine in Orkney (north).
The hopes of finding them more than one kilometer deep were very low. The rescue teams had lost contact with them since Saturday morning when one of them had explained that they were suffocating.
A fifth person seriously injured in the underground landslide could be rescued as early as Friday. She is currently hospitalized.
Mine accidents are common in South Africa, which has the deepest mines in the world. In 2018, 81 people died in the country’s mines, according to the South African Ministry of Mines.
