The former boss of world athletics died on Thursday night in Dakar. Still under trial, he had returned to his native country last May.
He wanted « to return to die with dignity in the arms of his grandchildren. After more than five years under judicial control with a ban on leaving the country, Lamine Diack had been authorized by the French justice to return to Senegal. He returned to Dakar on May 10 and died there on the night of December 2 to 3, surrounded by his family.
Died of « old age » according to one of his relatives, Lamine Diack died at his family home in Sicap Mermoz, alongside his wife and grandchildren.
Ill for several months
At 88 years old, this former international athlete, boss of world athletics (IAAF, now World Athletics) from 1999 to 2015, had been welcomed as a hero in Senegal. It was his former soccer club, Jaraaf, who paid his 500,000 euro bail to allow him to leave France.

Since his return, the patriarch was discreet, enjoying his family, his children and his grandchildren. Lamine Diack was actually « sick » and « very weakened » for several months, according to one of his relatives who had visited him recently.
He was sentenced by the French justice in September 2020 to four years in prison, including two years firm, and a fine of 500,000 euros for corruption and breach of trust. He was judged alongside his son, Papa Massata Diack, former marketing consultant to the IAAF.
The French justice had estimated that the two men had participated in a vast network of corruption to cover cases of doping of Russian athletes in exchange for bribes. The former head of world athletics and his son were implicated in a second case, this time concerning the embezzlement of revenue from television rights and sponsorship. Lamine Diack had assured the court that if the investigation led to a trial, he would have responded favorably to the requests of justice.
