Tyres burnt, buses pebbled, infrastructure burned, media attacked. As these lines are being written, the tension is palpable in Dakar. Demonstrations have been noted just about everywhere in the capital.
In the Parcelles Assainies, the town hall was ransacked and burnt down by angry young people. The same scene in Keur Mbaye Fall where our sources tell us that the gendarmerie was attacked by angry demonstrators. The gendarmerie was set on fire and there was a lot of damage.
Scenes of vandalism also took place in Keur Massar where Auchan was robbed. This followed clashes between demonstrators and law-enforcement agencies. In Soprim, an agency of the National Telecommunications Company did not escape the fury of the demonstrators who set fire to it.
Toll motorway blocked
At present, the motorway is paved with stones and infrastructure has been destroyed. This is the case of the ATMs. Some cars are currently trying to return to Dakar because they are unable to reach Rufisque or the suburbs.
The media under attack
The same for Le Soleil which was attacked by a horde of young people armed with Molotov cocktails. Vehicles were ransacked and the fire was brought under control.
As a reminder, these events occurred after the arrest of Pastef Ousmane Sonko’s leader for disturbing public order and participating in an unauthorised demonstration.
