President of the Republic Macky Sall presided on Friday the closing ceremony of the meeting of the High Level Committee on Peace and Security in the Uemoa zone. Meeting held in Dakar. On the sidelines of the meeting, the President of the commission of Uemoa delivered a not very brilliant diagnosis of the situation.
« Our meeting is taking place in a particularly worrying security context, in view of the recurrence of terrorist attacks perpetrated in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, of the extension of the terrorist threat to other member states of other unions. and the development of terrorist-related activities such as violent extremism and inter-community conflict, maritime piracy and cybercrime, « said Abdallah Boureima, chairman of the UEMOA commission.
He added that the problems confronting the countries of our Community space highlight the limits of the operational capabilities of the defense and security forces of the Member States, as well as the persistence of the poverty and even the extreme poverty experienced by the populations in parts of the region.
Mr Boureima underlines that this situation constitutes a source of serious concern for the security of the member states of the union as well as for the important achievements made with regard to regional integration.
« Our Union must make a strong effort in the continuation of the efforts of the States concerned, in particular through increased cooperation with regional organizations working for peace and security in our community area, in particular ECOWAS and G5 Sahel » said the chairman of the UEMOA commission.
He reassured that the committee had taken the necessary steps to ensure that the watch and alert mechanism was operational before the end of the current year, thus contributing to increasing the anticipation capacity of crises and conflicts.
It also stresses that the forthcoming adoption of the action plan for peace and security in the WAEMU space, « will usefully contribute to the consolidation of peace and good governance in the community area as well as to the support of States in post-conflict or humanitarian emergency situations. «
