The violent demonstrations noted in Dakar and in some localities causing the death of six people since the arrest of Pastef’s leader, Ousmane Sonko, are worrying diplomatic representations accredited in Senegal.
Indeed, in a joint statement reached , the Embassies of the European Union and its member states, Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Canada, South Korea, United States, Japan, United Kingdom and Switzerland call for « restraint ».
« We, as longstanding friends and partners of Senegal, observe with concern the incidents of violence we have witnessed in the country in recent days. We deplore the victims and express our condolences to their families and loved ones, » the columns of the text read.
These diplomatic representations recall that Senegal has « a long history of rule of law, participatory democracy, tolerance and respect for human rights, all values we share.
