The Ivory Coast and Egypt will not imitate Cameroon and Nigeria, respectively winner of the Olympic soccer tournaments of 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney. The two representatives of the African continent in the quarterfinals of these 32nd Olympics were eliminated. The Ivorians folded before Spain (2-5, a. p), while Egypt lost to Brazil (0-1).
Undefeated in the group stage, the Ivory Coast has passed by the feat against Spain, this Saturday, in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2021. With one minute to go, the U23 Elephants had achieved a historic qualification for the last four of the Olympic soccer tournament. But the Ivorians, who were leading 2-1 against Spain in the quarterfinals, conceded the equalizer in stoppage time (90’+3), before sinking in extra time (5-2). A cruel elimination for Soualiho Haïdara’s men who led twice in this match.
Like Côte d’Ivoire earlier, Egypt, the reigning African U23 champions, did not manage to create the exploit. Opposed to the Brazilian Olympic champions, the Egyptians lost in the quarterfinals at the Saitama Stadium (1-0). Dominated, the Pharaohs cracked before half-time, with a goal from Matheus Cunha, who beat the goalkeeper with a cross-shot (1-0, 37′). Despite their determination, Ramadan Sobhi and his teammates will not manage to come back to the score.
The Ivory Coast and Egypt will not succeed in achieving the same feat as Cameroon and Nigeria, respectively winner of the Olympic soccer tournaments of 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney.
