One soldier killed and another injured, reports Monday’s attack by gunmen on a residence of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in the town of Otuoke in southern Bayelsa state.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. (1 a.m. GMT). Goodluck Jonathan had just left his residence to spend the night in Yenagoa, the capital of the state of Bayelsa.
The assailants arrived by fast boat, as the residence is built on the edge of the Atlantic. They detonated a dynamite before entering the concession and began shooting with firearms.
The replica of two soldiers on guard gave way to an exchange of fire that cost the life of a soldier. And his colleague injured in the left leg was saved thanks to the intervention of an army unit alerted by another servant who had hidden in a corner of the concession.
If the army has not yet given the number of assailants killed, witnesses that these unidentified gunmen would have lost fifteen of theirs following the army’s response.
“The gunmen suffered heavy casualties. Blood was everywhere and we saw some survivors spinning in English, « said a resident of Otuoke.
When he got there to see the damage, Jonathan said he was shocked and said he wondered about the motive for the incident.
His thirst for response may be quenched after the investigation by the Delta Safe, the Joint Task Force for Safety and Security in Bayelsa, is released.
Goodluck Jonathan, head of Nigeria, was elected president of Nigeria in 2010 before being beaten in 2015 by current head of state Muhammadu Buhari.
