The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the appointment of Ambassador Babagana Kingibe as Special Envoy with ministerial rank to Chad and the Lake Chad Basin region. This appointment is in line with the resolution of the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission on the situation in Chad.
Ambassador Babagana Kingibe will, among other things, monitor developments in Chad and the Lake Chad Basin region; contribute to reconciliation and smooth progress towards a return to democracy at the end of the mandate of the current Transitional Military Council; collaborate with member countries and partners in the region with similar initiatives to restore stability, promote peace and security; and promote any other initiative aimed at restoring peace and security in Chad, North-East Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region
« With this appointment, President Buhari has demonstrated Nigeria’s determination to lead regional security efforts that will stabilise the Lake Chad Basin region, bring peace to Chad and ultimately eliminate the Boko Haram insurgency in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, » the Nigerian Presidency said.
The appointment of Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, is also the fulfilment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise to General Mahamat Deby Itno, Chairman of the Chadian Transitional Military Council, to support a smooth progress towards the return to democratic rule, during his visit to Nigeria in late May 2021.
An accomplished and multilingual diplomat, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe has served Nigeria at various times as Federal Permanent Secretary, Secretary to the Constituent Assembly, Minister and Secretary to the Government of the Federation. He has also participated in previous reconciliation talks between Nigeria and Chad.
