Nigerian President Mahamadou Issoufou and their families paid tribute on Friday to the 71 soldiers killed Tuesday in Inatès, in the deadliest jihadist attack in Niger’s history, at the Niamey air base where the bodies arrived early in the morning, noted an AFP journalist.
« Your death is glorious: weapons in hand, it is one of the best dead. This Tuesday (day of the attack) is a dark day, a black Tuesday. It was a terrible ordeal for our army, « said the head of state in front of the bodies, arranged in body bags wrapped with the flag of Niger, on the tarmac, in front of the families of the victims.
In a hangar, at the funeral ceremony, wives, children and relatives were seated, their eyes reddened.
The attack on the military camp of Inatès, in the west of Niger, very close to the Malian border, left 71 dead and missing. The attack claimed by the Islamic State group is the deadliest since the beginning of the jihadist attacks in Niger in 2015. The country declared a mourning of three days.
