A mayor and his driver were arrested on Sunday, January 2, while in a vehicle carrying drugs.
According to police sources quoted by Reuters, the vehicle belonging to the elected representative of a northern town contained 199 bricks of cocaine worth a total of 8.7 million dollars (5 billion FCFA). The information was confirmed by OCRTIS in a statement, the news agency said.
In the same country, a record seizure of 17 tons of cannabis resin transiting through Togo was made in March 2021.
Valued at $37 million (CFAF 21 billion), the drugs were bound for Libya.
A few weeks later, 5 tons of hashish were intercepted in Mali by Customs.
In June, the Senegalese Navy seized 8.3 tons of the same variety of drugs. This means that in the first half of 2021, more than 20 tons of hashish were seized by the various security services and drug traffickers in the three countries.
In October, the Senegalese navy achieved a new master stroke by seizing more than two tons of cocaine off Dakar.
