The election of Filipe Nyusi confirmed for a new five-year term. This leader of the ruling party Frelimo, collects 73% of the vote against 22% for his rival Renamo, Ossufo Momade. These official results were proclaimed by the Electoral Commission on Sunday. But they arouse many criticisms.
As soon as the official results were announced, Filipe Nyusi sent a unifying message: « We must work together to develop our country, » he said, addressing his main rivals. The urgency in his eyes: complete the process of demobilization of veterans of Renamo, the main force of the opposition.
But several voices have risen to question the transparency of this election. First among observers: Americans have expressed « significant concerns related to (…) irregularities that could affect the perception of the integrity of the electoral process. The Europeans did not mince their words either.
Criticism also emanated from eight members of the Electoral Commission, who also denounce anomalies in the electoral process. These officials believe that the president of this body is in the service of Frelimo, the party in power.
These critics support the opposition, which says it has observed « massive fraud » and rejects the results of these elections. The opposition intends to appeal to the Constitutional Council.
