Speaking at the opening of the ministerial meeting of the international coalition against Daech, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stressed the imperative of maintaining maximum pressure on terrorist outbreaks. « This trend must be carefully monitored, as it penetrates deep into local populations and exploits porous borders to move freely and recruit fighters, » Bourita stressed.
Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to participate in all initiatives aimed at countering terrorists, mainly the radical discourse of Daech. The kingdom is ready, stressed Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, « to contribute to this endeavour with its unique experience. In addition, the head of Moroccan diplomacy welcomed the coalition’s support to the countries of the region in two key areas, namely the collection and protection of battlefield evidence and the necessary overall security of the borders. « We remain ready to support these efforts and share our experience, particularly in border security and management, » he said.
« At the African level, terrorist groups have shown themselves ready to cooperate with organised crime networks and separatist groups, » the Moroccan Foreign Minister noted, detailing that « in less than six years, terrorist attacks in Africa have increased from 381 in 2015 to 7,108 in 2020 with a nine-fold increase in the number of victims, from 1,394 deaths to 12,519. A quarter of the world’s terrorist violence takes place in Africa with terrorist groups active in half of African countries.
Aware of the terrorist threat, Nasser Bourita welcomed the importance of engaging African partners in the fight against religious obscurantists. He revealed that they are best placed to know the threat in their respective regions and that capacities must be strengthened against Daech.
