It is an open secret that relations between Morocco and Algeria have not been good for years. However, Moroccan and Algerian personalities have launched the « Appeal of the Future » to the authorities in Algiers, calling for the opening of land borders to allow humanitarian corridors and the movement of people, and to put an end to the « war-mongering » in order to strengthen fraternal relations.
Will Algeria and Morocco finally sign the peace of the braves? If diplomatic relations remain tense between the two neighbouring nations, for years Moroccan and Algerian personalities have launched « The Call of the Future » to the authorities in Algiers, for a return to calm and good collaboration. This initiative is supported by 100 personalities. On the Moroccan side, the lawyer Naoufal Bouamri and the associative actor, Hicham Snoussi botamment. On the Algerian side, there is the journalist Walid Kabir, president of the Maghreb Association for Peace, Cooperation and Development, and the journalist Anouar Soulaimani, university researcher.
« We address our appeal to people of good intentions who believe in the unity of a common destiny, with a view to starting the gradual resolution of the problems », the initiators hope, asking the Algerian authorities to « take into consideration the human dimension of family relations, especially on both sides of the border, and to allow the very psychologically affected families to have the right to exchange visits with each other, within the framework of the opening of a humanitarian passage for pedestrians allowing them to renew contacts between them and to alleviate their suffering of more than a quarter of a century without being able to see each other again ».
The initiators of the « Appeal for the Future » also called on the « antagonists » to put an end to « hate » speeches, which are very often relayed in the media « subject to the narrow calculations of politicians in both countries ». They also called for « opening channels of dialogue between the elites of the two countries for a discussion without fanaticism or chauvinism », so that viable solutions can be found to the problems that are destroying the fraternal and good neighbourly relations between Morocco and Algeria.
« We consider that the humanitarian side can solve this situation and push to think about opening the borders for citizens of both sides, » said Moroccan lawyer Naoufal Bouamri, one of the initiators of « The Call of the Future », as well as the two former ministers Abdelkarim Benatiq and Jamal Aghmani, and the diplomatic adviser in Washington, Samir Bennis. It should be recalled that since 1994, the borders between Algeria and Morocco have been closed. Despite various appeals, the authorities of both countries have remained firm in their positions
