Meeting in congress on Saturday to elect a new government loyal to President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the Union for the Republic is trying to focus on the removal of Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz from the political scene.
“We’ve never seen this kind of mobilization in other conventions. This already shows the interest that these congressmen take in their party, in the various reforms that they expect from this party. They want to transcribe the will of the President of the Republic Mohamed Cheikh Ghazouani, which is a will to bring people together, « underlines Fatimetou Abdelmalek, Activist of the UPR.
Abdel Aziz had sparked controversy across Mauritania after he chaired a meeting of the ruling party in November, an move that politicians criticized and described as an « attempt at domination ».
Ould Abdel Aziz came to power in a military coup in 2008. He was twice elected president in 2009 and 2013, but did not stand in the last presidential elections in June, which were won by Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.
