Last year the Confederation of African Football decided not to award the trophy for best African player, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which forced the closure of some championships in Europe and the continent. For this year, Riyad Mahrez, finalist of the Champions League and champion of England, will be fighting with his eternal rival, the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, and the Senegalese Edouard Mendy.
English champion and winner of the League Cup, as well as finalist of the Champions League, a performance that he owes much to his decisive goals against PSG, Riyad Mahrez has had a great season in the colors of Manchester City. The Algerian international seems to be a serious candidate to win the trophy of best African player 2021. But, along with his eternal rival, the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, as well as the Chelsea hero Edouard Mendy of Senegal.
Some observers believe that the Senegalese international goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would be a close rival to Riyad Mahrez, after his role in Chelsea’s Champions League success against Manchester City (1-0). But, the Egyptian Mohamed Salah can also claim the crown, except that the Pharaoh has not won any title this year with his team, Liverpool.
Other players are also candidates for this honorary distinction of the best player of the year on the continent, as the Moroccan Achraf Hakimi (PSG), Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea), the Senegalese Sadio Mané (Liverpool), Idrissa Gana Guèye (PSG), the Ivorian Franck Kessié (AC Milan), the Nigerian Paul Onuachu (KRC Genk) and the Zambian Patson Daka (Leicester City)
