The Senegalese head of state and current chairman of the African Union, Macky Sall, said Saturday in Accra his intention to visit Ukraine after being received Friday in Russia by his counterpart Vladimir Putin.
« Yes (…) I will also go to Kiev. It is important to contribute to the return of peace, » Sall told reporters arriving at a summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Mr. Sall did not give further details.
Mr. Sall was received by Mr. Putin on Friday in Sochi (southern Russia). He asked him on behalf of African countries « to be aware that our countries (…) are victims of this crisis at the economic level.
He cited the blockage of grain, African countries are heavily dependent on exports from Russia and Ukraine, and the shortage of fertilizer. He argued that Western sanctions against Russia were exacerbating the effects of the crisis for African countries, and called for the food sector to be kept out of the retaliation.
He later said he came out of his talks with Putin « reassured ».
