In Libya, the civil war enters its ninth month, a war between Khalifa Haftar, the strongman of eastern Libya and the militias of Tripoli who support the government of national unity led by Fayez el-Sarraj. On Wednesday, new clashes took place in the center of the capital Tripoli. The clashes between two militias loyal to the National Union government, when militia broke into the Finance Ministry on Wednesday.
This is not the first time that militias loyal to the government of Fayez el Sarraj clash with each other in Tripoli. On the contrary, this type of incident has become systematic in a chaotic Libya since 2011.
The precise identity of the attackers remains indefinite, but obviously the Ministry of Finance has been targeted. Armed elements burst in and demanded Minister Faraj Boumattari who was absent.
Haftar strengthens
According to a source in the Presidential Council, the attackers took advantage of a demonstration in front of the ministry. Parents of « martyrs » who died during the Battle of Tripoli demanded late wages. It was on this occasion that the attackers burst.
According to testimonies of ministry employees, the gunmen could not find the minister, confiscated the weapons of the guards then withdrew, taking with them several armored vehicles including that of Prime Minister Fayez el-Sarraj.
On Wednesday, Haftar’s forces received new equipment and strengthened their positions south of the capital.
