It is a return to the capillary sources celebrated through the contest « Miss Nappy » in Ivory Coast.
The trend of natural hair was at the rendezvous this weekend on the occasion of the second edition of the Miss Nappy contest, a women’s event that promotes frizzy hair.
The natural hair corresponds to a desire to reconnect with its culture, as Sandrine Koné, initiator of Miss Nappy explains.
For maintenance, there are oils that soften the hair. Everything is a question of information.
« The Miss Nappy Contest is here to reappropriate culture and then help young girls to take care of themselves, to assume their natural hair, to assume their skin. »
Nappy is the contraction of « Natural » and « Happy » in English, which translates the desire to emancipate from the dominant white model: smooth hair, wigs, thinned skin … to the purely African model.
« The idea is not to look like Caucasian hair, to assume to have frizzy hair, says Sandrine Koné. For maintenance, there are oils that soften the hair. Everything is a question of information. The idea of the contest is that too. «
« Natural girls are so beautiful »
Very little makeup and hair in the wind, the candidates, whose age ranged between 18 and 25 years, share the whole idea of this return to the roots.
« I like the natural thing, actually. I like grafted hair and that’s what makes the woman worth. It’s beautiful to have frizzy hair, « says M’Py Stephanie, participant Miss Nappy 2019.
« Natural girls are so beautiful. No need to make a pile, to relax, to use chemicals, we are beautiful natural, « says Héléna Yavo, finalist, Miss Nappy 2018.
The jury and the public, who voted by courier, named Cécila Trokpossou, a 23-year-old Ivorian student, as the winner of this Miss Nappy 2019 competition.
