The Secretary General of FIFA, Fatma Samoura, said she worked for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) at the request of the latter, « who wanted to correct certain aspects of its governance.
Fatma Samoura said she gave the Confederation of African Football « an action plan » including « 100 points ».
CAF has set up a monitoring and management committee, so it must prove that it can set the record straight by implementing the parts of the recommendations that concern [its] leadership, » said the former Senegalese official of the United Nations.
CAF has recognised that the recommendations have been clear enough to allow it to take over from Fifa, » Samoura added, referring to the work she had to do for the continental confederation.
Fatma Samoura said she agreed to work for CAF to help it. Because she had enough time to do so, she said in the interview relayed by the daily sports daily Record, which belongs to the same press group as the TFM.
It was going to be a problem for me if CAF made this request today, » said Samoura, who believes that the preparations for the 2022 World Cup (men) and the 2023 Women’s World Cup would not have allowed her to do so.
Fifa does not sponsor any of the candidates for the presidency of CAF, she said, following Veron Mosengo-Omba, the director in charge of football development programs of the world body.
The secretary general of Fifa said she knows Augustin Senghor very well, Ahmed Yahya quite well, and less well Patrice Motsepe and Jacques Anouma, all candidates, like the Malagasy Ahmad Ahmad, to the leadership of African football.
The best candidate is the one chosen by the 54 African member federations of Fifa, according to their criteria, » she said, adding: « Let the best win.
