For Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the planet must be pragmatic during the next ten years in terms of health. As recommended by the 17th objective of sustainable development.
That’s it ! Humanity has just burned 20 years since the start of the 21st century. But 2020 also heralds the start of a new decade.
A third decade dedicated to the achievement of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among these SDGs, the third relates to health. « Enabling everyone to live in good health and promoting the well-being of all at all ages, » reads the UN agenda.
But will this deadline be really respected given the context and the health policies implemented around the world? This may be possible, according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
« Countries are investing heavily in protecting their people from terrorist attacks, but not from the attack of a virus, which could be far more deadly and far more damaging economically and socially. »
The world is thus bound to be pragmatic. The decade to come is therefore one of « action », warns the WHO Director-General. « 2030 is fast approaching and we must hold our leaders accountable for their commitments. »
He therefore calls for multisectoral involvement in health fights. « We face common threats and we have a shared responsibility to act, » said Dr. Ghebreyesus.
