The 24th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations of women’s handball started this Tuesday at the Palais des Sports in Yaounde, Cameroon. For the first day in group B, the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon took the best on Kenya (40-16), while the DR Congo survived Nigeria (35-16). After the withdrawal of Algeria, they are 11 teams in the running for the continental title.
Facing a Kenyan team that is participating in its first ever Africa Cup of Nations in women’s handball, the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon did not need to force their talents. They quickly imposed their territorial domination and won easily (40-16), nearly 30 goals apart.
« The most important thing for us was to win this game. Our goal is to win together, to be a united team on the field. That’s what we did and we will have to continue like that in the next games. This victory is a real motivation, it makes us want to go further, » said Vanessa Djiepmou, the captain of the Cameroonian team, after the first victory of his team.
In the other game of group B, DR Congo also won against Nigeria (35-16) in curtain raiser. This Wednesday, the Nigerians will try to achieve the feat against the formidable Cameroonian team, candidate for the title.
« This is a game that we will approach with a lot more caution. We had the opportunity to see them play before the confrontation with Kenya. We have all the cards in hand to make the same result, namely victory, » said Vanessa Djiepmou, who dreams of going to the end of the competition and lift the trophy.
