The religious were kidnapped on Sunday morning in Croix-des-Bouquets, near the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, as they « were on their way to the installation of a new priest », explained Father Loudger Mazile. According to AFP, the kidnappers are demanding a million dollar ransom.
The rest of the group of kidnapped religious includes four priests and a nun, all Haitians. In a statement, the Haitian Conference of Religious (CHR) expressed its bitterness. « The CHR expresses its deep sorrow, but also its anger at the inhumane situation we have been experiencing for over a decade, » it said.
The police suspect an armed gang active in the area, known as the 400 Mawozo, of being behind the kidnapping. Kidnappings for ransom have increased in recent months in Port-au-Prince and the provinces. « Not a day goes by without weeping and gnashing of teeth and yet the so-called leaders of this country, while clinging to power, are increasingly powerless, » she added.
The perpetrators of this kidnapping, which has been broadcast around the world, have demanded a ransom of one million dollars, otherwise they are threatening to burn the seven abducted people alive. The word « barbecue » was used by the kidnappers to make their decision clear if the ransom was not paid.
