Following the example of the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, Ecowas « condemns in the strongest possible terms » the coup d’état that took place on Sunday 5 September 2021 in Guinea.
In a statement read by Seneweb, the current President of Ecowas, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, demands « respect for the physical integrity of the President of the Republic, Professor Alpha Conde and his immediate and unconditional release as well as that of all those arrested.
In response to the decision of the coup plotters to dissolve both the constitution and the republican institutions, ECOWAS is brandishing sanctions. Indeed, it demands « the return to constitutional order on pain of sanctions.
Reaffirming its disapproval of any unconstitutional political change, ECOWAS « asks the defense and security forces to remain in a republican posture.
