Former Prime Minister Umaro Sissoco Embalo was declared the winner of the presidential election on Wednesday with 53.55% of the vote.
A victory contested by the candidate of the majority party, PAIGC Domingos Simões Pereira, who denounces “fraud”.
According to the official results communicated by the national electoral commission, Simões Pereira came second with 46.45%, which is 7 points less than his winning opponent.
The PAIGC candidate had collected 40.13% of the votes in the first round, far ahead of Umaro sissoco who had obtained 27.65%. Sources indicate that the elections were conducted in a calm manner, without any incident.
Umaro Sissoco Embalo says he is ready to work with the ruling party to restore political stability in the country.
