Nigerian Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Wizkid have both won awards at the 2021 Grammys. Burna Boy won the Best Overall Music Album category, while Wizkid won the Best Music Video award for his song with Beyoncé, Brown Skin Girl, from the album Lion King: The Gift. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari took the opportunity to congratulate Burna Boy and Wizkid.
Africa was again in the spotlight at the 63rd Grammy Awards. Presented by South African comedian Trevor Noah, the 2021 edition saw the consecration of Nigerian star Burna Boy in the « world music » category and the confirmation of Beyoncé as the undisputed queen of the Grammy Awards, with her 28 trophies. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari welcomed the awards to Burna Boy and Wizkid.
The congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu. « Congratulations to Burna Boy on receiving the 2021 Grammy, the world’s most prestigious music award. He has made notable contributions in the field of music that have brought glory to Nigerians at home and abroad. We are proud of his groundbreaking achievements, » the statement said.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari also congratulated Wizkid for emerging as a co-winner of the Grammy Awards in a different category. He commended the efforts of trailblazers such as King Sunny Ade and Femi Kuti, whose creative efforts have earned them Grammy nominations, paved the way and taken Nigerian music to the world.
Muhammadu Buhari noted that the record-breaking musical achievements are a recognition of Nigerian creative talents and that the awards will open doors for other Nigerian and African talents.
