The 2020 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon, a competition in which only players playing in their national championship on the continent can compete, will take place from April 4 to 25, the Cameroonian Minister announced. sports.
The competition, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will be a warm-up round and a test of Yaoundé’s ability to host an international competition – before the main competition of the continent, the African Cup of Nations (CAN ), which will be played in 2021 in Cameroon.
At the last moment in November 2018, CAF withdrew the organization of the 2019 edition of the CAN to Egypt, due to delays in infrastructure works.
« The 6th edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be held in Cameroon from April 4 to 25, 2020, » said Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi Monday, setting up the organizing committees of the future competition. The final draw will take place in Yaoundé in January.
Mr. Mouelle Kombi expressed to the CAN the « recognition » of his country for the choice of Cameroon to « house CHAN-2020 and CAN-2021 ».
The decision to withdraw Cameroon’s 2019 edition of the CAN triggered a heated debate in the country. The CAN had questioned the delays in the construction and rehabilitation of the stadiums to host the competition.
