Africa’s richest man, Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote, still intends to buy English club Arsenal. But former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell has called on the businessman to speed up plans to buy the club. European Super League consequences.
Will Aliko Dangote finally become the first African to own an English Premier League club? It may well be, but the process for the continent’s richest man still seems very long in the eyes of some Arsenal fans. Indeed, former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell has called on the businessman to speed up plans to buy the club from American Stan Kroenke.
Emirates Stadium’s majority shareholder Kroenke has never been the man most loved by Arsenal fans. But his reputation hit an all-time low with Gunners fans after it was made public that the American was behind the club’s involvement in the disastrous European Super League. Yet Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has hinted that he could buy Arsenal in 2021, if a number of multi-billion dollar projects for his company are completed in time.
Asked whether he would accept a Dangote takeover of Arsenal, Kevin Campbell said via Football Insider: « 100 per cent I would like to see him take over. First and foremost, he’s a huge Arsenal fan. He’s also one of the richest guys around at the moment. He’s got the money. That’s the key. He has more than money.
« As a fan of the club, he would like to get us back on the right foot. I would 100% like to see that happen. I would absolutely love it. With him at the helm, all the fans can count on a conscientious owner. You want the owner to present the best possible product on the field. It’s not like the 70s and 80s. These football clubs are global entities, » he concludes.
