The conflict in Tigray between the Ethiopian central government and the TPLF has triggered a worrying humanitarian crisis. As denunciations of human rights abuses increased, the Security Council met to adopt a joint statement on the conflict.
At the UN, Russia and China opposed the adoption of a declaration on the crisis in Tigray. The declaration called for an « end to the violence » that has been taking place in the region bordering Eritrea since November 2020.
According to diplomats who spoke to AFP, the two countries consider that the armed conflict in the region is an « internal affair ». More specifically, they call for the deletion of the reference to the draft text calling for an end to violence in Tigray. This request is unacceptable to the Western members of the Security Council.
