The Egyptian foreign ministry said on Friday that it was following the situation in Iraq with great concern and called for further escalation.
The statement was made after an American air strike that killed Iranian elite Quds force commander Qassem Soleimani.
« The foreign ministry is following with great concern the acceleration of developments in Iraq, which bodes well for an escalation which is important to avoid, » said the statement.
« Controlling the situation requires the immediate cessation of all kinds of regional intervention in the Arab countries and the affairs of their peoples, » the statement said.
Following the assassination of Qassem, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei announced three days of national mourning in his honor.
Soleimani was widely regarded as the second most powerful figure in Iran.
However, Iran has promised « hard revenge ». On Friday, the National Security Council of Iran called an emergency meeting to decide on the country’s reaction to the American strike. Reports indicate that Khamenei participated in the meeting for the first time.
The US embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday suspended consular services after being targeted by Iranian-backed protesters. Other officials say the murder of Qassem will only strengthen Iran’s resolve.
