In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the activities of the organizing committee for the commemoration of the Year 1 of political changeover were launched this Thursday, December 19. While the Congolese authorities intend to sanctify this celebration, dissonant voices are already being heard.
The details begin to filter after the induction ceremony of the steering committee of these festivities. Scheduled to take place on January 24, the historic date of the inauguration of President Félix Tshisekedi as head of the country, the celebration will involve seven commissions which will have to work for its smooth running. Among other things, they will have to ensure that they receive as guests Central African heads of state as well as the friends of President Tshisekedi and those of his predecessor Joseph Kabila.
Other tasks assigned include the construction of a « democracy » monument, the printing of a collector’s note which will be printed by the central bank and will be sold as souvenirs, as well as the organization of popular demonstrations. Estimated cost of the commemoration, six million US dollars.
A budget that is already controversial in the DRC where, for a part of the population, these celebrations are budget-consuming especially as they are not an emergency. On social networks, members of civil society including LUCHA and other Internet users were quick to denounce the government’s mismanagement.
“Let’s help him develop this country, and not by looking for business where there is none… @ JeanMichelJohn4 @MichaelTshi. 6 million is 60 schools of 6 classes each … The work-study program can be celebrated differently without squandering the coffers of the State, « deplores a surfer.
« We call on #RDC donors / partners to stop turning a blind eye to the systematic flow of public money by the Tshisekedi administration and the lack of concrete action to fight corruption. Their silence / inaction is worth bail, ”insists LUCHA in turn.
