Condolences for the people of Chad continue to pour in from world leaders and personalities following the sudden death of President Idriss Déby Itno on Monday night. Togo’s Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, Seychelles’ Wavel Ramkalawan, Benin’s Patrice Talon and Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, have also sent their messages to the President of Chad’s Transitional Military Council (TMC), Mahamat Déby Itno and to the entire Chadian people.
Togo’s President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé sent a message of condolences to Chad’s Transitional Military Council, following the death of Idriss Déby Itno on Monday night. « I learned with emotion the death of President Idriss Déby Itno. A statesman whose commitment to peace in Chad and stability in the Sahel was constant. In these painful circumstances, I express my full solidarity and that of the Togolese people to his family and his country, » Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé said.
In his message, the President of Seychelles Wavel Ramkalawan also said that « it is with deep sorrow and sadness that the people of Seychelles and I learned of the death of President Idriss Déby, who died on the field of honour. A man of action and a pan-African convinced of the profound unity and necessary solidarity of our continent, President Déby embodied for me a powerful commitment to the fight against terrorism and the stabilisation of the Sahel region as a whole. As such, his death is a great loss for Chad and for Africa.
On his Facebook page, President Patrice Talon also offered his condolences and those of Benin to the Chadian people. « I learned with amazement the death of the President of the Republic of Chad, Mr. Idriss Deby Itno. In these tragic circumstances, I present, on behalf of Benin and on my own behalf, our sincere condolences to the entire Chadian people. Receive the solidarity of the Beninese people, » wrote the Beninese leader.
Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu also sent a message of condolences to the Chadian people. « I send my deepest condolences to the people of Chad on the death of President Idriss Déby. We will miss his bold leadership and always remember his historic decision to renew Chad’s relationship with Israel, » Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted.
« The official funeral of the Marshal of Chad, President of the Republic (…) Idriss Déby Itno, who died on 19 April, will take place in the Place de la Nation on Friday, 23 April, in the presence of heads of state and government of friendly countries, » said in a statement the protocol of the Chadian Presidency. After the last honours of the nation, this Friday, in N’Djamena, Déby will be buried in his hometown of Amdjarass, at 15h45.
