Babani Cissokho, passed away yesterday in Bamako at 4am.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday 30 March 2021 from 10am in his native village of Dabia.
The remains will be flown in after a posthumous decoration by the government and the United Nations. He was 76 years old…
Mayor of the commune of Dabia, in the circle of Kéniéba, Kayes region, Babani Sissoko made his fortune between 1995 and 1998 by coaxing a Dubai banker. The BBC devoted an investigation to him entitled « The ‘playboy’ who took $242 million from a bank ».
It all started with a loan from a bank in Dubai to buy a car. Once the contact was established, he managed to get an appointment with the bank manager, Mohamed Ayoub. He pretends to have magical powers to multiply any amount of money. To fool his pigeon, he performs an experiment that convinces the Dubai banker.
This led to a business relationship that cost the Islamic bank in Dubai 242 million dollars, to the benefit of Babani Sissoko. A few years later, Babani Sissoko had difficulty honouring his commitments to his creditors. In 2012, he was evicted from his house by Boubacar Djigué, to whom he owed 150 million francs.
Despite this descent into hell, Babani Sissoko retained his seat as mayor of Dabia, where he is still adulated…
