The Tanzanian authorities’ mistrust of covid-19 vaccines continues unabated. The country is currently promoting traditional remedies, some of which are locally produced and have even been approved by the relevant authorities.
« For the time being, Tanzania does not intend to import any of the vaccines used in other countries until we are satisfied that they have been clinically proven safe, » she said.
The minister called on Tanzanians to improve their personal hygiene and turn to traditional medicine, including the use of plants. A demonstration of how to prepare a traditional remedy was even given to the journalists.
« We Tanzanians should be a good model for our neighbouring countries in improving our personal hygiene and using our local plants to treat not only covid-19, but also asthma, flu and other diseases, » said Dr Dorothy Gwajima.
The minister also revealed that some herbal remedies made in Tanzania have even already been approved by the relevant authorities in the country.
This statement by the Minister of Health comes a week after President John Magufuli warned against the use of covid-19 vaccines. The leader has made no secret of his aversion to all restrictive measures such as the containment imposed in other countries to curb the spread of the virus.
According to official data, Tanzania was only slightly affected by the pandemic. The country has so far registered only 509 cases and 21 deaths.
