Chad has just lost one of its valiant soldiers and worthy sons, in the person of its Head of State Idriss Déby Itno, who died of wounds on the field of honour on Tuesday. After the announcement of his death, a Military Transitional Council (CNT) was set up with the son of the late leader, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, alias Mahamat Kaka, at its head. In the wake of this, the 37-year-old army general made an initial statement to reassure the Chadian population and Chad’s allies.
Faithful to the oath made to the Nation and the Chadian people, the Marshal of Chad, former President of the Republic, and now former Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, Idriss Déby Itno, has just taken his leave of the battlefield as a result of wounds sustained while defending territorial integrity. His son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, alias Mahamat Kaka, at the head of the Military Council of the Transition, takes over. He made his first statement to this effect.
« It is with deep bitterness that we announce to the Chadian people the death, this Tuesday 20 April 2021, of the Marshal of Chad, Idriss Déby Itno, as a result of his wounds on the front. This painful event occurred on the day of the proclamation of the provisional results of the CENI, which gave the Marshal of Chad the right to the supreme magistracy, in the first round of the presidential election. Indeed, Chad’s Marshal Idriss Déby Itno, as he does every time the republican institutions are seriously threatened, took the lead in the heroic fight against the terrorist hordes from Libya. He was wounded during the clashes and died after being repatriated to N’Djamena, » said the CNT, led by Lieutenant General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno alias « Mahamat Kaka ».
« We offer our sincere condolences to the Chadian people, to his biological and political family and to all those in Africa and the world who have an admiration and attachment to this great statesman. May Allah the Almighty welcome him into his vast paradise. If all human beings are called to die, the death of the Marshal of Chad, Idriss Déby Itno, has a profound meaning for Chad and Africa as a whole for his multiple commitments in the service of Pan-Africanism and Peace. Faced with this highly worrying situation, the Chadian people must show their commitment to peace, stability and national cohesion, which are sacred values for the Marshal of Chad, » he said.
« In this regard, a Military Transitional Council (MTC) is set up to ensure the defence of our dear country in this situation of war against terrorism and the forces of evil in order to ensure the continuity of the state. Therefore, the following measures are taken from this day onwards: The Transitional Military Council guarantees national independence, territorial integrity, national unity, respect for international treaties and agreements and ensures the transition for a period of 18 months; A 14-day national mourning period is decreed throughout the country; Flags are flown at half-mast and national funerals will be organised; The National Assembly and the Government are dissolved; A transitional charter will be promulgated by the President of the Transitional Military Council; A curfew from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. is established throughout the country; Land and air borders are closed until further notice; A transitional government will be put in place, » said the National Military Transitional Committee (CNT).
« New republican institutions will be put in place at the end of the transition through the organisation of free, democratic and transparent elections in the spirit of sacrifice for which the Marshal of Chad fought throughout his life until his last breath. A call for dialogue and peace is made to all Chadians, both inside and outside the country, to continue building Chad together. The Transitional Military Council reassures the Chadian people that all measures are being taken to guarantee peace, security and republican order. Long live the Republic. Long live Chad, » he concluded. This statement, read out from the Chadian Presidency, is signed by Lieutenant General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno alias « Mahamat Kaka », the new interim President of Chad.
