Lovers of the sport of football will remember that for the first time in the organisation of the African Cup of Nations, officials of the continental body, in alliance with those of FIFA, visited Cameroon from 22 to 28 May 2021, to evaluate the sites of the 2021 African Cup of Nations.
It was on Saturday, May 22, that the CAF-FIFA delegation began its inspection visit. And it is at the Palais des Sports that everything began with a working session with the local organizing committee of the CAN, under the leadership of its president, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, also Minister of Sports and Physical Education.
The experts dispatched by the two bodies have begun in Yaounde, an inspection visit of the infrastructure of the CAN 2021 scheduled from January 9 to February 6, 2022, in the country of Roger Milla. These experts, 23 in all, led by the Deputy Secretary General in charge of development, Antony Baffoe, have screened the stadiums and hotels selected in the specifications of the competition.
It should be noted that these CAF experts have a good knowledge of Cameroon’s infrastructure, having already visited the country for the organisation of the CHAN 2020. They have redeployed with particular emphasis on the stadiums that did not host the CHAN.
« We know the stadiums here well. We just finished the CHAN. There are three stadiums that were not used during the CHAN including the stadiums of Olembe, Bafoussam and Garoua. These facilities will be inspected, » said Samson Adamu, during his last visit to Yaounde. It was a question for CAF to evaluate the level of progress of the work of the said stadiums and to give instructions.
At the end of this inspection visit which lasted seven days, according to the emissaries of the two bodies, the level of work is satisfactory in all three stadiums. The sports complex of Olembe (Yaounde) which should host the opening match and the final of the competition will be delivered next November, reassured its Canadian manufacturer MAGIL.
The inspectors of the Confederation of African Football have taken the measure of the Sports Palace of Yaounde proposed by COCAN 2021, for the draw of the CAN 2021, on June 25, 2021.
