Recently awarded a Grammy, the popular Nigerian Afrobeat musician Burna Boy was again in the spotlight at the BET Awards on Sunday night. The ‘Kilometre’ hitmaker won the award for best international act. The awards organisers took to their official Instagram account to announce the nominations for the 2021 awards.
The award-winning superstars, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as ‘Wizkid’ turned Big Wiz and Damini Ogulu aka ‘Burna Boy’, were each nominated for the Best ‘International Act’ of the 2021 BET Awards, along with several other international artistes. But, the award eventually went to Burna Boy, who was also a Grammy Award winner this year. Speaking after receiving the award, the ‘Kilometre’ hitmaker revealed that he was grateful, even though this was his third time winning the award.
The world renowned Nigerian artiste, Burna Boy, noted that it had not been easy but that there was no turning back. « We have contributed to your growth, » he said. « I just want to thank God who made this possible. I also want to thank my mum and the whole management team who work tirelessly alongside me. This is my third such trophy. We were back to back and it was not easy, but we are not stopping here. I want to thank the BET management team again for this great award, » he added.
A self-proclaimed ‘African giant’, the Nigerian artiste has been praised by many of his fans across the continent. « The African giant who has run millions of miles to his success. Tarime boy Tanzania we love you! « wrote one fan under the handle Buddha Man. « Sincerely, when it’s your time, it’s your time, nothing can stop it, » Ganiyu Bisiriyu posted. « Congratulations Burna Boy. You are making all of Africa proud, » said Nnajiuba Chizitere.
