While the capital of the Cherifian kingdom, Rabat, was preparing to host this year’s « Diamond League » meeting, starting on 23 May, this athletics competition has been cancelled by Morocco, due to health restrictions linked to the Coronavirus pandemic. As a result, Doha will officially launch the season on 28 May.
The « Diamond League » will officially launch its season with the Doha meeting, as the Rabat meeting has been cancelled. Indeed, for health reasons, this meeting will no longer take place in Morocco. The meeting, which was actually scheduled for 23 May, was supposed to officially launch the 2021 edition of the Diamond League. Unfortunately, the organisers will have to wait and see.
« The meeting circuit should therefore start, as usual, on 28 May in Doha, unless the International Federation finds another competition to replace Rabat. The cancellation of the Moroccan competition should be made official next week, » writes the French sports magazine L’Équipe.
Rabat will not be the only meeting to suffer the consequences of the Coronavirus pandemic. The one in Oslo, Norway, which was supposed to be held next June, will not take place in the end. This is after the measures taken by the Norwegian government in the fight against Covid-19, which is still far from over.
This season, fourteen meetings were on the Diamond League calendar, including one on 22 August at a venue to be determined. If the cancellation of Rabat is officially confirmed, the meetings will start on 28 May in Doha, Qatar.
