No indulgence now to doping athletes in Kenya. The Sports Ministry announced Tuesday that the perpetrators will have to answer in court.
Penal sanctions of up to prison terms will be imposed on the offending athletes, warned the Sports Minister. Amina Mohamed said a team was working on legislation to criminalize doping by 2020.
Kenyan athletes have so far been spared by the country’s law which only provides for prison sentences of up to three years for support staff involved in doping stories. Which could soon change.
These announced changes follow the corruption scandal linked to a vast doping system that has rocked the International Athletics Federation in recent years. A scandal that has severely damaged the image of Kenya, of which 138 athletes were pinned in 2018 by a report of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
