At the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, security has been reinforced since the leader of the Pastef / Patriots party went to the temple of knowledge. Yesterday morning, security at Le Coud, for fear of violence, arrested students at the Faculty of Law on suspicion of preparing a strike.
The social campus is under heavy surveillance, despite the calm there. Yesterday, Friday morning, the security services of the Centre des œuvres universitaires de Dakar (Coud) arrested two students from the Faculty of Law and Political Science before releasing them.
The authorities are under the spectre of violence, since the university is known for rivalry between political tendencies. The students were suspected of organizing a strike. As a result, security began criss-crossing the campus in search of any grouping. At the university’s front door, screening is intense; vehicles are routinely searched before entering the campus. Students’ bags are also checked before they are let through. The national police, who are positioned every day in front of the main gate, arrived very early with the armoured vehicles to prepare for any eventuality. But the presidents of the student unions have stepped up to the plate to denounce the arrests. « You can’t arrest students because you think they want to go on strike. Moreover, it is not up to them to arrest students, it is the police who must do it, » says Abdoulaye Cissé, president of the students’ association of the faculty of legal and political science. Ousmane Sonko’s visit to the social campus last week provoked fights between his supporters and students close to the government. In fact, a search of the students’ rooms that followed the fights led to the seizure of many edged weapons.
