In early October 2020, thousands of Nigerian youths, through the « End SARS » movement, took to the streets of Lagos to protest against the violence of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Many people around the world have rallied to their cause to end the police brutality. Beninese star Angélique Kidjo has called on her colleague Yemi Alade from Nigeria to speak out against the atrocities committed around the world.
Angélique Kidjo and Yemi Alade sing ‘Dignity
After their song « Shekere » which made the black continent dance, musician Angélique Kidjo, recent Grammy winner, reunited with Afro Pop singer Yemi Alade for a single entitled « Dignity ». Produced by Vtek da Awesom, the song was inspired by the Nigerian youth movement that protested against the violence committed by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
In an interview with the press, Angélique Kidjo said that many people think that police brutality only happens in the United States, but it happens everywhere.
An expressive and colourful music video
Yemi Alade’s talent has added a twist to the song, with the Nigerian artist’s passionate energy donning the mantle of an activist directly involved in the movement calling for an end to SARS’ actions.
With the song’s catchphrase advocating reciprocal respect, this musical work appears to be another anthem for the reclamation of humanity.
